How do I know if I’ve got what it takes?

Do you enjoy solving puzzles, using logic to work through challenging tasks and learning new skills? Then this is for you!

People who enjoy learning new languages, math, or music often excel in this field – but so do people who prefer geography, history and drama! Whatever your passion, there’s only one way to find out if you’ll also love cybersecurity. Give it a shot!

Requirements to participate:

  • Identify as female
  • Be at least 13 years old on February 18, 2019
  • Be enrolled in 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade

What if I get stuck?

If you become stuck and are unable to progress, there are plenty of helpful resources within the tools. CyberStart Assess is an aptitude assessment so the resources are limited. You will need to carry out research using the internet and resources, such as blogs, for clues and tips. However, within CyberStart Game there is a field manual, which will help you progress.

One point to note: it is not considered cheating for you to use team mates and search engines to try and find more information about a tool or technique. That is simply being a great security practitioner!  We have a Office Team and a Discord chat set up to help you collaborate and work together with others in our school.

Count me in! How do I get started?

Email me:  or talk to Mrs. Birely in the library /  Mr. Johnson in the Learning Center to get signed up. Linn-Mar already has a Cyberstart Online Club set up!  We will be utilizing Microsoft Teams and Discord to work through the problems.

Game Timeline

Stage 1: Cyberstart Assess – Opens March 20th 2019 & Closes April 12th 2019

The journey begins with CyberStart Assess. This phase consists of a series of questions, each harder than the last, that measure existing knowledge, problem-solving skills, and potential for a career in cybersecurity. No prior computer science experience is required, and students from all educational backgrounds are encouraged to take part.

To be eligible for selection to the next stage, CyberStart Game, clubs need to have a minimum of 5 girls registered who have completed 6 CyberStart Assess challenges each.

Stage 2: Cyberstart Game – Opens April 22nd & Closes June 28, 2019

In CyberStart Game, students take on the role of a junior security agent. They are guided through a series of self-learning simulation exercises to gather information, crack codes, uncover security flaws, and dissect a cyber criminal’s digital trail. Participants use our in-tool resources, team collaboration, and research techniques to advance to the next challenge.

Stage 3: Cyberstart Compete

The top schools in each state will be invited to nominate a team of girls to participate in CyberStart Compete, a Capture the Flag competition. Teams will compete against other students from all over the country to win cash prizes for themselves and their schools!
